Animals by Walt Whitman is a simple poem where the poet talks about the difference between men and animals in terms of qualities. The poet calls them tokens.
Tokens are compassion, peacefulness, honesty, simplicity, etc. According to him, men are selfish, artificial and complicated.
Since animals have more qualities than men, the poet wants to be with animals. He says that animals are placid and self-contained, whereas men are restless and lack peace of mind. Neither animal is dissatisfied and runs after materialistic pleasure nor animals kneel to other animals.
Because of such reasons, he is surprised to find these qualities in animals and happily accepts the tokens that he finds in animals.
At the end of the poem "Animals" ends with an open ended question- whether men have lost the qualities or they have been given to the animals long time ago.
