The Modi government introduced the Goods and Services Tax was in 2017, hailing it to be ‘Good and Simple Tax’. Eight years later, even the tax rate for essential goods like food, and electronics, and not simplified. In the 55th GST council meeting, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced new tax rates for different flavours of popcorn.
