it was no easy task to end the season (and especially this whirlwind of a summer) with my debut in the fiendishly difficult killer that Mahler’s “unofficial 9th symphony,” 𝐃𝐀𝐒 𝐋𝐈𝐄𝐃 𝐕𝐎𝐍 𝐃𝐄𝐑 𝐄𝐑𝐃𝐄. definitely one of the most challenging concert works for the tenor voice!! 🥵

he wrote this symphonic song cycle after the darkest period of his life: forced to leave his post at the vienna court opera, grieving the death of his daughter, and facing his own diagnosis of a congenital heart defect. i say “unofficial 9th symphony” as he ultimately decided to not number it as an attempt to outwit fate, being conscious of the so-called “curse of the ninth” that affected the greats before him. alas, he did not live to hear its premiere!

this is the very climactic section from the first movement, 𝘋𝘢𝘴 𝘛𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘬𝘭𝘪𝘦𝘥 𝘷𝘰𝘮 𝘑𝘢𝘮𝘮𝘦𝘳 𝘥𝘦𝘳 𝘌𝘳𝘥𝘦, from our concert last saturday with the incredible members of the Hermann-Levi-Akademie conducted by Finnegan Downie Dear, which was part of the @bayerischestaatsoper Münchner Opernfestspiele, this summer marking its 150th season.
