2018 Note: Getting some traffic on this one. It's worth noting that this is over three years old, and while I still stand by my thesis that Gothel has anti-Semitic coding present in her design (intentional or not) and that you can't reasonably justify the absence of characters of color in Tangled by saying that Corona is historically-accurate Germany (it's just not), I will also admit that my research skills, presentation, and my own understanding of these issues have improved since I made this video. Were I to revisit this topic (and I probably will), I would approach it differently.

This week, I explore the complicated relationship Tangled (2009) has with race. Including cultural appropriation, the absence of characters of color, and racial coding. The next video for Tangled will address the emotionally abusive relationship between Rapunzel and Mother Gothel.

Yes, yes, this video is late. As they so often are (for me at least). Originally I was going to make one big video about Tangled but then I realized I couldn’t possibly make the video a reasonable length and still give everything the time I thought it deserved. So it’s been split into (at least) two videos, this being the first.

Despite my research, I wasn’t able to find the artist of the Cultural Appropriation illustration I used in the video, which I used because it so accurately expresses what is so horrifying about cultural appropriation: having the descendants of those directly responsible for the genocide of a race use clothing sacred to those people for a costume is all kinds of messed up (like gloating? Hey, we systematically killed a bunch of you and now we're going to use your clothes for a joke!) If anyone is able to let me know who the artist is so that I can credit them, please do!
