The first public meeting in Thoothukudi since the cold blooded murder of 13 people, including a schoolgirl, in police firing was held by the CPI(M). The Government and district administration had refused permission for any public meetings and so the Party went to the Madurai High Court. The court observed that the freedom of speech and public interactions cannot be curbed and gave permission for the meeting. This enthused the people in a big way.

Prior to the meeting, Comrade Brinda Karat, along with Comrades U.Vasuki, P.Sampath, K.Kanagaraj, K.S.Arjunan and district leaders also went to four villages adjoining the plant whIch were the worst affected. Women complained of midnight raids by the police. In one village, 70-75 women were forced to stay in a temple due to fear of these night raids. The delegation met families of those who were killed.

The delegation also met district officials and the IG of police, and raised the complaints made by residents. Meanwhile, the AILU has filed a petition demanding an independent probe into the police firing under the supervision of the High Court. In preliminary comments, the High Court said it was a case fit to be investigated by the CBI.

The public meeting was presided over by District Secretary Comrade K.S.Arjunan and addressed by Comrades Brinda Karat and U.Vasuki.
