To solve all five nonzero components of the three-phase system, it is sometimes convenient to take either a unit volume or unit weight approach. For example, if the water content of the soil is given and we see that water content is defined as the ratio Ww/Ws, it may be convenient to assign Ws=1. This makes the weight of water Ww=water content. On the other hand, if the porosity is given and we see that porosity is defined as the ratio Vvoids/Vtotal, it may be convenient to assign Vtotal=1. This makes the volume of voids Vvoids=porosity. If both options are available, it is often more convenient to use the unit weight approach rather than unit volume, as there are only two unknown weight components and three volume components.
