INTRODUCTION (From the 1992 manual):

The sun does not always shine in the Yolkfolk village. In fact, this particular day is looking remarkably grim. Stormy clouds thunder across the sky, the rain hammers down, the electricity flickers and, to top it all, Grand Dizzy is in an awful mood.

The source of Grand Dizzys bad mood is his egg-ache. The old duffer had been practising his somersaults in the kitchen and slipped on the wet floor. "What do you think you were doing bouncing around like that at your age?!" groaned Dizzy under the strain of picking up the old egg. "You`ll give yourself a nasty crack on the head."

"Its the temple of the Crystal Kingdom," spluttered Grand Dizzy, "its been robbed. Every egg knows that if the Crystal Sword, Chalice and Crown are removed from the temple, terrible strange things will happen to the Yolkfolk!"

Dizzy looked outside. Things did look decidedly bad. "It still doesn`t explain why you were jumping off the Kitchen chair, Grand Dizzy" said Dizzy.

"Well, young fella-me-egg," said Grand Dizzy puffing himself up slightly, "I`m sick and tired of you always sorting things out. I`m going to get into shape, pack my knapsack and save the Yolkfolk myself. I was really heroic in my day, y`know."

A salty tear formed in Dizzys eye. "I don`t know, Grand Dizzy, what are we going to do with you?" gushed Dizzy in his best sympathetic, yet caring, voice. Grand Dizzy was packed off to bed. But the moment everyones back was turned, he jumped up and continued to whinge loudly at anything he could find that would listen.

Dizzy decided that he must begin his trek to retrieve the Yolkfolks treasure. He packed his knapsack and popped on his new safari hat. Dizzy grimaced and, through gritted teeth, dramatically declared "Don`t fear, Grand Dizzy! The lost treasures of the Yolkfolk will soon be found!". And so Dizzy began a whole new adventure - can our hero succeed again??

REVIEW:

Back in the days many, many, many commercial Dizzy games was released for the ZX Spectrum, and just as many Russian Dizzy games was released afterwards. These games was very poor programmed as Dizzy was color clashing with everything, he always had the same color as the background. This made it very hard to see what was going on and it was the reason that I never played these games. But Dizzy became popular among the ZX people, and the ZX Spectrum is the platform with the most Dizzy games.

The first Dizzy game was released in 1987, and in 2017, at the 30 year anniversary of Dizzy, the last commercial game for the ZX Spectrum – Crystal Kingdom Dizzy has been released as a remake version! The thing is, that the 8 bit versions were different from the 16 bit versions, so the remake is based on the Amiga / Atari ST game, although the remake still has the bottom screen display (with improved graphics) from the original ZX Spectrum game, and crappy things from the Amiga / Atari ST versions like e.g. the elevator in the tree on the first level has been removed.

It is kind of funny to compare this remake to the Amiga version, because you can clearly see that the Amiga has many more colors, higher resolution and you can also hear that it has a more advanced sound chip - but the Amiga version loses in every aspect compared to this remake …even the loading screen! It is an incredible amount of details that has been crammed into the graphics in this game. You can hear that it is the same melodies that is used for the soundtracks but Sergey Kosov, that has done the remake music really knows how to program the AY chip, because this music absolutely rocks, and the Amiga music seems rather poor compared to this. There is an extra intro screen in the remake, that is not in the Amiga version, and the music here is absolutely excellent – I have let this music play for 10 minutes in this video!

I think most ZX Spectrum users is familiar with the Dizzy games, but you control an egg and you have to wander around and solve puzzles to open up new areas. In this game the treasures of the prophet Zeffar have been stolen and because of this the ice palace in the land of ice is now melting, so Dizzy has to find and return the treasures. This game features four levels, 136 screens and 6 soundtracks.
