Описание к видео A NYC grocery story that imports food from England deals with on again off again tariffs

(9 Apr 2025)
RESTRICTION SUMMARY:

ASSOCIATED PRESS
New York – 9 April 2025
1. Exterior Myers of Keswick, a family-owned grocery selling imported food from the United Kingdom
2. SOUNDBITE (English) Jennifer Pulidore, owner, Myers of Keswick:
“We import HP Sauce, Hobnobs, McFitties, Flakes, Crunchies, Jams, Golden Syrup, Bird's Custard, and they come from the UK.”
3. Customers at the counter
4. Close, a box of jam made in England
5. SOUNDBITE (English) Jennifer Pulidore, owner, Myers of Keswick:
“Now you wonder, is it going to be more cost effective for me to not even import and just buy off of wholesalers? Or should I just switch back to only importing my own stuff? It'll be a long road because we'll have to do a lot of cost evaluation.”
6. Various, Pulidore stocking shelves
7. SOUNDBITE (English) Jennifer Pulidore, owner, Myers of Keswick:
PULIDORE: “We currently have some biscuits and our seasoning on the water. So once we get that into the port and we get the pricing and see how that's affected, we'll have to go from there.”
REPORTER: “So the pricing that you have with what's in stock on the shelves now you'll have to adjust once you have to restock what's on the shelf.”
PULIDORE: “Correct.”
8. Walking shot down the grocery aisle
9. SOUNDBITE (English) Jennifer Pulidore, owner, Myers of Keswick:
“Well, there's only so much we can do, you know, get our paperwork and price it accordingly and then see where we go in a week. But the whole back and forth is very irritating.”
10. Customer at the counter
11. Pulidore arranging a shelf
12. SOUNDBITE (English) Jennifer Pulidore, owner, Myers of Keswick:
“There's a price mark on some of these items, which is what it's sold for in the UK. For example, the Digestive's Caramel are listed at $2.25, we sell them for $6.95. On that, I have to add the cost of bringing them over, New York City rent, employee wages. Now you're looking at an additional, at least. dollar that's going to have to go on top of that when I break down a new container of goods that's gonna add ten percent to me.”
13. Various, food imported from England
14. SOUNDBITE (English) Jennifer Pulidore, owner, Myers of Keswick:
“I just hope they understand and know that, you know. it's not something we personally want. We're in the same boat as them, yet we're also just trying to make a living and provide them with a taste of home, but there are some things that will have to suffer. On a lighter note, we're not the highest of the tariffs, you know.”
15. Customer at the counter
16. Woman packing a bag of imported food at the counter
17. SOUNDBITE (English) Jennifer Pulidore, owner, Myers of Keswick:
“This store has seen so much in it's almost 40 years, from personal stuff to 9-11, COVID, foot and mouth. And, you know, we survived it all. This definitely worries me. It really does, because I find that people have a lot of problems with the pricing already. As I mentioned, sometimes they can't wrap their head around the fact that... It's marked as is, but there's so many other factors to getting it in. This 10% definitely scares me and worries me for our future.”
18. Customers walking down the aisle to leave the store
STORYLINE:
President Donald Trump on Wednesday abruptly backed off his tariffs on most nations for 90 days even as he further jacked up the tax rate on Chinese imports to 125%.

For grocery store owners that import the majority of the items in their store, the on again off again tariff policy is "irritating."
