This Technicolor Western, set in 1877 Wyoming, explores the conflict and eventual peace between the U.S. Cavalry and the Cheyenne tribe, who are being relocated to a new reservation. The story centers on Josh Tanner, played by Robert Wagner, a surveyor who is initially tasked with mapping the new reservation but becomes personally involved in the negotiations. The film highlights the difficult transition faced by the Cheyenne chief, Little Dog, portrayed by Jeffrey Hunter, who accepts the inevitable move, and his defiant rival, American Horse. John Lund plays Colonel Lindsay, the commanding officer trying to enforce the peace treaty. The plot thickens with a love triangle involving Tanner and two women, one white and one Cheyenne. Other significant cast members include Debra Paget and Hugh O'Brian.
