Inside the Studio. Watch Mosaic Artist Rachel Davies Create Beautiful Mosaics Inspired by Nature

Watch the different stages involved in making this mosaic, including cutting up/preparing the materials, planning out the design, and putting all the pieces together.

This mosaic was created as part of an art challenge to create a series of small mosaics inspired by images from nature. The mosaic measures 2.5x3.5 inches.

This mosaic was inspired by an image of sand dunes, taken on a stormy day. Pieces of porcelain tile (winckelmann's tiles) are cut into thin pieces using wheeled nippers. They are combined with pieces of stone and set into a bed of tile adhesive (also known as thinset). A pigment was added to the adhesive to achieve the yellow colour. The background was created with a cement-based self-levelling compound, with different coloured pigments added to it to create the sea and the sky.
