CHARLESTON , S.C. (WCIV) — More than 600 Charleston County students experienced homelessness in the school district last school year. Star Gospel Mission has always been a source of help for those in need. Today, they marked the expansion of their facilities with a groundbreaking this morning.

It's another tool in the fight against homelessness, this time using a piece of Charleston history to accomplish that goal.

Star Gospel Mission, a piece of history in itself.

"Star Gospel Mission began in an old theater that was being repurposed for the need to support folks who were unhoused at that time. It's really the Charleston way," said Charleston City Councilman-Elect Aaron Polkey.

The Charleston way means giving back, like Phase one of the Brighter Together project - creating 30 new beds of transitional housing.
