Today I went on a whitewater rafting trip on the Nenana River. The Nenana River is a tributary of the Tanana River and is about 140 miles (230 km) long. It begins at the Nenana Glacier and flows briefly southwest, then west, then north, forming the eastern boundary of Denali National Park.
The river is one of the most popular destinations for boating and whitewater rafting in Alaska. This section of the Nenana is supposedly Class 3 & 4 rapids. It was really more like 2 & 3.
The tour guide picked me up at the RV park and then we went to their office to get fitted for helmet, life jacket, and dry suit. The dry suit fitted tightly around the next and wrists so that if you were to fall out of the raft you would immediately freeze in the very cold river water.
I had the GoPro camera mounted on the top of my helmet, so with no gimble, the footage was a bit shaky at times.
Joining me on the raft were a married couple from Dallas, plus two young guys and a young woman who were in Alaska for the summer working for Alaska Fire Services.
I had initially signed up for the “no paddling” option, which meant I would be just along for the ride. However, that morning they called and said that very few people had signed up for that trip, and asked if I would mind joining a trip where I would paddle with the others. I said that was fine.
After some initial instructions, we set off down the river.
