The Fiat New 500 (project 332), also known as the Fiat 500e is a battery-electric car by Italian manufacturer Fiat. The New 500 city car is manufactured at the Mirafiori plant in Turin and is sold alongside the conventionally-powered Fiat 500 (2007), which continues to be manufactured in Tychy, Poland. That 2007 car was used as the basis of a previous BEV Fiat 500e (2013), which was sold only in the United States and had a much smaller range than the New 500. It was scheduled to be launched at the Geneva Motor Show but that event was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It was unveiled on 4 March 2020 in Milan.[4]
The New 500 has a 320 km (199 mi) range on the European WLTP combined test, and achieves 400 km (249 mi) on that test's urban cycle, which is generally favourable toward electric vehicles (EVs). The car is powered by an 87 kW (116 hp) electric motor, fed by a 42 kWh lithium-ion battery pack. Fiat 500e is the name of the battery EV made by Fiat from 2013 to 2019. It was an EV conversion of the internal combustion 500 of 2007, and was sold in the U.S. states of California and Oregon as a compliance car to earn clean energy credits (the Renewable Energy Certificate) for Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA). The New 500 produced since 2020 is the dedicated BEV model sold in Europe, and is often referred to colloquially as the 500e, among other names.[5]
The Abarth New 500e Scorpionissima is a performance variant that will be released in 2023.[31][32] It made its official debut on 22 November 2022,[33] featuring unique scorpion-badged alloy wheels.[34] Initially, it will be released in a Scorpionissima edition limited to 1,949 examples.[35] Scorpionissima models will be available in a choice of Acid Green or Poison Blue colours, bearing unique side graphics and wheels.[36] The first deliveries were scheduled for June 2023.[37]
It has a single electric traction motor that produces 114 kW (153 hp) and 235 N⋅m (173 lbf⋅ft), an increase of 26.7 kW (35.8 hp) and 15 N⋅m (11 lbf⋅ft) over the standard motor,[38] and accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 7 seconds.[39] The enhancements in power and torque output are derived from improved inverter and battery wiring, and a reduction in the final-drive ratio.[40] The Abarth also swaps the rear drum brakes on the New 500 for discs.[41]
Three driving modes are offered: Turismo, Scorpion Street, and Scorpion Track; output power and torque are limited to 100 kW (130 hp) and 220 N⋅m (160 lbf⋅ft) in Turismo.[38] Scorpion Street maximizes regenerative braking, simulating the engine braking effect of a conventional car equipped with a manual transmission,[36] while Scorpion Track sacrifices range for performance.[38] In manufacturer testing at Balocco, the Abarth 500e is able to complete laps 1 second quicker than the Abarth 695.[38] Total weight is 1,410 kg (3,110 lb), including the 295 kg (650 lb) battery.[40]
Charging hardware is carried over from the regular New 500 equipped with the larger battery, at rates up to 85 kW.[38] The Abarth 500e has a battery with a capacity of 42.2 kWh (gross) and 37.3 kWh (net), giving the vehicle a claimed range of 264 km (164 mi) under the WLTP driving cycle with the standard 17-inch wheels; equipping the 18-inch wheels reduces range to 253 km (157 mi). Real-world mixed driving with 18-inch wheels indicated an actual range of 212 km (132 mi), with consumption of 3.4 mi/kWh.
The Abarth 500 is a performance model of the Fiat 500 tuned in-house by FCA's Abarth subsidiary. It was unveiled at the 78th Geneva Motor Show, a year after the rebirth of Abarth brand and company.[30] All models use a turbocharged and intercooled version of the 1.4 L Fire I4 petrol engine.
The Abarth 500's 1.4 L engine is equipped with an IHI RHF3-P turbocharger, and is rated at 135 PS (99 kW; 133 hp) at 5,500 rpm and 180 N⋅m (133 lbf⋅ft) (206 N⋅m (152 lb⋅ft) in sport mode) torque at 3,000 rpm. It includes a five-speed C510 transmission, low ride suspension, electric power steering with sport setting, 6.5 x 16" aluminium alloy rim with 195/45 R16 tyres and four-wheel disc brakes (front ventilated). Interior includes turbo pressure gauge, gear shift indicator, aluminum foot pedals, Blue&Me entertainment system with telemetry and GPS. The car costs £13,600 in the UK. A 5-speed automated manual transmission (called MTA) is available as an alternative to the manual transmission.
The Fiat 500 is an A-segment city car manufactured and marketed by the Fiat subdivision of Stellantis since 2007. It is available in hatchback coupé and fixed-profile convertible body styles, over a single generation — with an intermediate facelift in Europe with model year 2016. The 500 is internally designated as the Type 312 by FCA.
