In today’s lesson we’re going to look at the most commonly used Wh questions words. By the end of this lesson you should be able to identify which question word to use in each situation.

Let’s have a look at these seven Wh questions words first and then i’ll explain when to use each one and I’ll give you some examples.

We have :-
What
Where
Why
Who
Which
When
How

Let’s start with what. We use what when we want to ask for information about something.

The most common question with what is
What’s your name?
What’s your job?
What time is it?

Next we have where. We use where to ask about place or position.
Where do you live?
Where are you going on your next holiday?
Where do you work?

Then we have why
We use why when we are asking for a reason or an explanation
Why are you studying English?
Why are you so happy?
Why did you say that?

The next Wh question word is which. We use which when asking about a choice.
Which hand do you write with?
Which car is yours?
Which cake do you want?

Then we have when. When is used to ask questions about time.
When is your birthday?
When did you go to London?
When are you getting married?

And we have who. We use who to ask about a person., when the person is the subject.
Who is your best friend?
Who told you that?
Who did you go with?

And finally we have how. How is used to ask about way, manner, condition or direction.
How do I get there?
How old are you?
How can I improve my English?
