A drop cap, or dropcap, is an initial letter in a chapter which is larger than the rest. It shouldn't just be that the letter is artificially inflated by a few point sizes. The letter should actually be three lines tall - that is, it should be inset on the left-hand side of the page in a way which fills three lines. This creates a beautiful professionally published look to the page.
