Since their highly acclaimed 1997 debut album, Karma To Burn’s riff-driven, heavily grooving instrumental songs have reflected almost the entire history of international rock music. And as we all know, composing a song without vocals requires lots of concentration on the continuous flow of the arrangements since Karma To Burn have no singer to cover up any weak passages. For this reason, their tracks come across like a rollercoaster ride which goes up and down, keeping the suspense going throughout. Their latest album is called Mountain Czar and is intended as a tongue-in-cheek reference to the band’s stylistic direction because in the early days, the music by this American trio was referred to as stoner rock although none of the musicians smoke marihuana. Then their style was labeled desert rock although Karma To Burn don’t hail from the desert but from West Virginia, which is also called ´The Mountain State`. “So it practically suggested itself to look for a term which really suits our music,” guitarist William Mecum smirks.

Seit ihrem hochgelobten 1997er Debütalbum spiegeln sich in den Riff-getriebenen, heavy groovenden Instrumentalsongs von Karma To Burn nahezu die gesamte Ausdehnung der internationalen Rockhistorie wider. Man kennt das: Einen Song ohne Gesang zu komponieren erfordert besondere Konzentration auf den kontinuierlichen Fluss des Arrangements, denn bei Karma To Burn gibt es nun einmal keinen Sänger, der vermeintlich schwache Passagen kaschieren könnte. Dementsprechend wirken ihre Stücke wie Achterbahnen, in denen es rauf und runter geht und die Spannung permanent erhalten bleibt. Der Titel ihrer aktuellen Scheibe lautet Mountain Czar und versteht sich als augenzwinkernder Querverweis auf die stilistische Zuordnung der Band. Denn anfangs wurde die Musik des amerikanischen Trios als Stoner Rock bezeichnet, obwohl keiner der Musiker Marihuana raucht. Anschließend nannte man ihren Stil Desert Rock, dabei kommen Karma To Burn gar nicht aus der Wüste, sondern aus West Virginia, einem Staat, der den Beinamen ´The Mountain State` trägt. „Was also lag näher als nach einem Begriff zu suchen, der wirklich zu uns passt?“ schmunzelt Gitarrist William Mecum.
