I'm Ted Norby director of instruction for the National University Golf Academy. What I want to talk about today is the soft little shot around the green. Either some people call it a chip some people call it a pitch but anything that kind of goes soft, short, doesn't roll out a whole lot. The soft little lob or soft high pitch shot. The issue everybody has is they try to open the club face up. I don't want to open the club face up because if I open the club face the balls gonna go off to the right. Then what people do is they open their body up to compensate and what actually happens is that in relation to my body and to my feet, the ball now is actually in back of my stance.

I put the ball back in my stance to hit a lower shot. I want to play the ball more forward in my stance to hit a higher shot. So instead of opening the club face and opening the body, what I want to do is actually increase the loft. So, if I'm set up right here, club face straight to the target, what I want to do is increase the loft of the club. And I'm gonna increase the loft by the handle moving back. Now you can see the shaft is increased, lean back a little bit so now my club face is increased loft by ten, fifteen degrees.

Now, if I stay square to this, that's gonna look weird. My hips aren't in line perpendicular with the shaft. So now I want to turn my body open a little bit. But what have I done? I'm keeping the shaft and the handle left of my zipper. Forward up toward my left thigh a little bit. So now I'm definitely lined up left of the target with my body and with my feet, but in relation to my body the club head is still forward, the ball is still forward in my stance. So I still have some loft left on there. As opposed to getting it back in the stance like that. So, increase the loft, then put your body so that your zipper is just, just back of the grip, grip just inside my left thigh. Now it's the same little pitch shot that we've been doing the whole time where my arms just swing along my foot line.

And that's gonna pop that ball up in the air a little bit, it's gonna land a little bit softer. So increase the loft of the club, don't open the club face, for the soft short shot around the green.
