For many people around the Country a familiar morning activity
has been a run, but not just any run but rather an Australia Day Fun Run.

In Townsville the 4.5km fun run kicked off at 7.30am which had over 1000
participants of all ages.

It was then time for a little rolling of the pitch in time for the
Twenty20 Cricket test at Riverway Oval where India played Australia.

Unfortunately the Australian's bowling wasn't quite up to the standards
of the Indians.

--

With Australia Day being an opportunity for all Australians to come
together and celebrate their diversity it was time to see what some
of our new Citizens think of Australia.

--

34 new Australian citizens took their oath of affirmation in Townsville.

There were 12 Australia Day Awards given out to Australian's that have
made a difference whether that be locally, nationally or even internationally.

CITIZEN OF THE YEAR - Garth Harrigan

A member of the National Seniors Townsville Branch, Townsville Region Committee of the Ageing, Managing Director and President of TOTTS, Garth has been active in promoting community transport for seniors, including Bikeways in Townsville, Sunbus and wheelchair taxis.


YOUNG CITIZEN OF THE YEAR - Emily Michelle Moore

Emily Moore has made considerable and varied contributions to her local, national and international communities including attending the Rotary Youth Enrichment Program and the International Youth Forum in Missouri, USA where she represented Australian youth and participated in peace discussions and charity fundraisers. Emily has organised, led and contributed in many fundraising events, including those for the Cancer Council, Leukemia Foundation and Abused Child's Trust.

Among the award recipents was Arthur Payne who received a Spirit of Townsville award
for being a dedicated member of the Townsville Coast Guard since the 1990s.
