Earlier this year, the campaign and battle honours awarded to the 28th Māori Battalion by decree of Queen Elizabeth II in 1955 were presented for the first time ever in public.

The only living member of the battalion says Māori protocol was the clincher to finally have the honours perpetuated on colours in acknowledgement of a proud distinguished and famous history that has been denied by the New Zealand Government and Defense Force officialdom for 67 years and counting.
