Watch: Brawl Breaks Out in Turkish Parliament Over Ousted Opposition MP Can Atalay

A massive brawl erupted in Turkey's parliament on Friday when an opposition deputy from the Workers' Party of Turkey (TIP) was attacked after advocating for his jailed colleague Can Atalay during the session. The violence started after ruling AKP member Alpay Ozalan assaulted Ahmet Sik, who appealed to restore Atalay’s parliamentary immunity. The altercation escalated as numerous other MPs joined the fight. Atalay was sentenced to 18 years in jail in 2022 for trying to overthrow the government after participating in the 2013 Gezi Park protests. He was elected to the parliament in May 2023. Atalay campaigned from the prison and won the Hatay province seat. The parliament ousted him on January 30 this year after his conviction. The Constitutional Court ruled on August 1 that his expulsion was invalid.
