Why Ganesh Chaturthi is Celebrated?

एक दिन की बात है, भगवान शिव कैलाश से दूर गए थे...परन्तु... उसी समय, कैलाश पर्वत के अधिपति भगवान शिव अपने गणों के साथ कैलाश की ओर लौटे। द्वार पर खड़े नन्हे बालक ने हाथ का दंड घुमाया और ज़ोर से गर्जन कर गणो के समूह को चेतावनी दी। गर्जन की गूँज सुन सभी शिवगण चौंक गए। कौन है यह बालक? भगवान शिव ने पूछा। बालक ने उत्तर दिया कि वह माँ पार्वती का पुत्र है, और उनकी आज्ञा है कि कोई भी भीतर न आए। शिव मुस्कुराए, परंतु बालक अपने कर्तव्य से अडिग रहा।

One day, Lord Shiva went away from Mount Kailash. It was time for a bath, and Goddess Parvati was applying a herbal paste (ubtan) on her body. She requested Nandi to ensure that no one, not even Lord Shiva, should be allowed to enter Kailash during her bath, and that he himself should guard Kailash from outside. However, Nandi refused, saying that he could not stop Lord Shiva. Parvati became angry, her heart filled with sorrow and a sense of loneliness...

However, at that moment, Lord Shiva, the master of Mount Kailash, returned to Kailash with his followers (Ganas). At the gate, a young boy twirled a staff in his hand and roared loudly, warning the group of Ganas. Hearing the echo of his roar, all of Shiva's Ganas were startled. "Who is this boy?" Lord Shiva asked. The boy replied that he was the son of Mother Parvati, and it was her command that no one should enter. Shiva smiled, but the boy stood firm in his duty....
