I upgrade the subwoofer in my RS!

This is the second half of the sound system / audio upgrades that I have now completed in my Ford Focus RS, with the first being the door speakers and tweeters from Powerbass.

The Powerbass upgrade was done along with Dynamat sound proofing and was a worthy upgrade, replacing the average Sony speakers to give a richer sound with more clarity and frequency coverage.

There was still compromise with this setup - the Ford / Sony subwoofer. This passive subwoofer that splices signal from the rear door speakers is surprisingly an optional upgrade from Ford.

The main issue is that it is passive. It is also very small but size is irrelevant as it would never have enough power to drive a decent amount of bass. So even with the best EQ settings in the Focus RS sync system, it was always lacking. This is especially evident if you ever compare the Ford / Sony sub setup with a different car that has an actually good woofer option.

It was therefore a needed mod to compliment the excellent door speakers - replace the Ford / Sony sub with a powered woofer - enter the JBL BassPro HUB!

This is the perfect replacement for the Ford subwoofer as it active, peaking at 200W RMS from the built in amp, but also fitting into the factory subwoofer location meaning we can go for an OEM plus install!

Of course, being that we are coming from passive, there is the issue of getting a power source. This I resolve elegantly using the fuse panel beside the subwoofer along with a piggyback cable from Autobeam which works great and is much easier and convenient than running cable all the way to the battery!

I also continue the OEM plus and convenience theme by installing a matching Molex connector to the JBL wiring harness that allows plug and play connection the factory Ford signal connector!

This install has a couple of tricky elements but the results are amazing!

Fiberglass Woofer Cone with Rubber Surround

Built-in Class D 200W RMS amplifier
The JBL subwoofer system’s built-in amplifier is optimized to work as a system with the woofer. Its Class D design runs cooler and draws less current from your vehicles electrical system making it the perfect concealed subwoofer solution.
Wired Remote with User Interface Controls
Gain control adjusts the volume level right from the drivers seat. Phase switch changes the input phase to inverted or noninverted. (This can sometimes be helpful for troubleshooting.) Crossover frequency control adjusts the crossover frequency to any point between 50Hz and 150Hz. Bass EQ control provides 12dB of boost.
Line-level Inputs and Speaker-level Inputs
The JBL BassPro Hub has line level inputs and speaker inputs that allow you to connect to any car audio system making it a great upgrade to your factory system or the bass foundation of the aftermarket system of your dreams.
Harman Standard Reliability Testing
JBL speakers have to undergo a testing process that would destroy lesser speakers. JBL freezes them, bakes them, shakes them, blasts them with ultraviolet light and drives them at full power for days at a time.
