Found as a stray on the Yale campus in
1917, the bull terrier mix Stubby was smuggled to France by Corporal Robert Conroy. When discovered, the dog saluted his commanding officer, a trick Conroy had taught him, the amused officer allowed the dog to stay. For 18 months, his sharp senses proved vital; he could hear incoming artillery shells before humans and smell gas early, allowing him to bark as a warning. He even caught a German spy in the Argonne, a feat that got him a promotion to Sergeant. After the war, the decorated hero met Presidents Wilson, Coolidge, and Harding.
