How does Tableau handle 'NULL values' compared 'sparseness' in the data?

Definitions:
NULL value: an underlying record exists, but the value is NULL
Sparseness: no record exists in the underlying data set

In this follow-up we now return again to look at the very same sample data, but this time with a focus on the very subtle and tricky behavior around three different kinds of so-called ""NULL"" values:
1. NULL value in the real underlying data
2. NULL value that's been imputed, as the result of the golden rule in Tableau Relationships
3. Sparse data which, when looked at in ""view underlying data"" is shown to be NULL (when really it isn't even there)
