The Rise of the Varangian Guard | Viking warriors Byzantine service | Byzantine Protectors

For more than four centuries, the Varangian Guard was a constant presence in the Byzantine Army, known as the military force of the Eastern Roman Empire. It was famous for its members' stature and bloodthirsty conduct in battle, where they used their fearsome double-bladed battle axes to devastating effect. Apart from being an elite unit within the army, they also served as personal bodyguards to the Byzantine emperors of the time.
