Gleðilega hátið; Happy Holidays from Iceland! You know Iceland as the land of fire and ice, but we wanted to dig a little deeper and head to Iceland for the holidays.

A holiday visit to Iceland isn’t complete without a visit to Hafnarfjörður, a cute harbor village near Reykjavík that is known for their hidden folk – elves, dwarfs, and other magical creatures. During the holidays, the town comes alive with a Christmas Village, ice skating, magical fairy lights, and tons of iconic Icelandic treats. Before visiting the Christmas Market, make sure you check out Hellisgerdi Park to see their magical lights and during the winter, slide down a few of the park's icy slides. If Jon can handle it, so can you!

If you are outside Reykjavík and looking for a more authentic Icelandic market, make sure you check out the Christmas market at Elliðavatnsbær in Heiðmörk. This natural Christmas market is located in the forest alongside a beautiful lake at the site of the Reykjavík Forestry Association. This is where many locals go for their Christmas trees so it's well worth the 15-20 minute drive out of the city center. There is even a cozy Christmas lounge with a wood burning stove to warm up in front of with a cup of hot cocoa. It is a great location to escape the city and enjoy the epic views.

Back in Reykjavík, there is plenty to do and see to fill your holiday cup including ice skating at Ingolfstorg Square, a Christmas Market at Austurvollur square, and plenty of lights, trees and decorations throughout the city.

But what makes Christmas in Iceland unique? It’s deep belief in folklore and mythical creatures! Icelandic people believe in Grýla, a monstrous ogre that lives in the wilderness and is a monstrous entity who lives in the wilderness of Iceland and eats naughty and mischievous children. If you aren’t familiar with the tale, she has 13 sons, the Yule Lads, and an equally monstrous pet cat, Yule Cat. Starting on Dec. 12, the Yule Lads visit Icelandic children each night leading up to Christmas and leave a small gift or treat for those good children and a potato for those who are misbehaving. The Yule Lads are mischievous themselves and each has a specific tale and trait that makes him unique from his brothers. And the Yule Cat eats anyone who doesn’t receive new clothing before Christmas Eve. that do not receive some clothing before Christmas Eve. These Christmas folklore characters are found throughout Iceland in the wintertime and its amazing to see children interact with the Yule Lads at the Hafnarfjörður market or the massive Yule Cat lit up with lights in Reykjavík.
