Sports Journalists Association of Goa's (SJAG) Geno Sports Awards 2018-19 were presented on Friday in Panaji. Chief Minister Pramod Sawant was the chief guest. He hailed the multi-discipline-multi category (individual, team, sports media) awards, which have entered its third decade with great commitment from sponsors Geno Pharmaceuticals CMD, Dilip Salgaocar and Executive Director Dr Sagar Salgaocar, along with the oganisational team of SJAG.

Addressing the who's who of Goa's sports ecosystem, Sawant said: "We will institute similar awards through Directorate of Sports & Youth Affairs for Goan sportspersons excelling at the national level next year. Great days are coming up in the sports field with different policies being considered for betterment of sportspersons. I also support attendance-related issues for college students, who are aiming at sports excellence, and as such the provisions at the University level need to be reviewed."

Dr Sagar stressed on the importance of the support system around athletes, identifying the need of mental toughness in the players and the role needed to be played by the support staff, most importantly parents and the friends of the athlete. "We have observed that focus of the sportspersons shift at a certain stage and then there is a dropout. As sport is a dynamic event, making a comeback is a tough ask. Hence, the support staff around the athletes, need to talk to the players and get their mental makeup to a level that will keep them going. Moreover, it is also seen that sportspersons may consider dropping out from a career in sports due to their perceived security in traditional professions. However, sports careers are surely rewarding because of the mental as well as physical attributes to them. A change in thinking has to be brought in first in the support system so that the athletes can be groomed to stand the test of time," explained Dr Sagar.

Dilip Salgaocar, who has been a cricket lover since his boyhood, revealed how his passion for the game was instrumental in fuelling the iconic Geno sports awards upon understanding the idea of SJAG over two decades back. He expressed happiness at SJAG's steadfast and neutral selection of awardees from various sports disciplines and Goa emerging to be a vibrant state with blooming sports talents. He highlighted the first of its kind categories of 'special' and 'rural' amongst others as new opportunities to oft-neglected sections of the society.
