Learn how aviation history was made at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport! Six massive prefabricated modules—each weighing up to 1,200 tons and measuring 204 feet long—were transported across two active runways using specialized self-propelled transporters. HOK's planners, architects, designers and engineers share how they collaborated with project partners to achieve this milestone.

This groundbreaking modular construction project is part of the DFW Forward capital plan and represents one of the largest efforts of its kind in U.S. aviation. The innovative approach allowed construction off-site, minimized airport disruptions, and accelerated delivery of nine new Terminal C gates opening in 2026.

The HOK-designed megastructure modules were twice as large as DFW's recent "High C gates" project, taking modular construction techniques to an unprecedented scale. The complex overnight transport operation required advanced structural planning and close collaboration across disciplines to pull off this engineering feat safely across active airport infrastructure.

This Terminal C expansion is a major milestone in the historic DFW Forward program—the airport's largest capital investment since HOK originally designed DFW in 1974. The project demonstrates how modular design and bold vision are redefining airport construction, delivering faster timelines and smarter infrastructure solutions. DFW has continued to be at the forefront of modularity evolution, with mechanical, electrical, plumbing and fire-protection systems installed in the modules prior to transport.

Design and construction for the first phase and expansion of the Terminal C project, as well as the expansion of Terminal A, is being managed by HNTB, KAI and ADPI. The design-build project's contractor joint venture includes Austin Commercial, Azteca Enterprises, and Alpha & Omega, with HOK and Muller & Muller, Ltd. serving as design team members.
