During Community Resilience Part 1: Resilient Cities, we heard from Kian Goh and Alisa Orduna about social justice issues in our cities related to climate change and homelessness. Kian explained how our response to sea level rise also needs to address issues of equity, showing examples from Jakarta and Red Hook in Brooklyn. Alisa walked us through the Refresh project in Skid Row, which provided toilet rooms, showers, and fresh drinking water.

Kian stated that through policies, we see "who is considered in the city and who is considered outside of the city". Alisa reminded us that " Income doesn't make you more or less human" yet homeless individuals are often subjected to conditions that don't meet basic human needs.

Kian talked about how communities have shown resilience despite systemic problems, and how she's hopeful seeing the momentum that some movements are having, putting pressure on decision makers.
