About this video: So what is HTTPS? Well, HTTPS stands for Secure HyperText Transfer Protocol and is for all practical purposes does the same thing as the normal old HTTP.

HTTP stands for Secure HyperText Transfer Protocol, and it is an application layer protocol, which means it focuses on how information is presented to the user of the computer but doesn’t care about how data gets from Point A to Point B. It is stateless, which means it doesn’t attempt to remember anything about the previous Web session. This is great because there is less data to send, and that means speed. And HTTP operates on Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) Port 80 by default, meaning your computer must send and receive data through this port to use HTTP. Not just any old port will do.

The difference between HTTP and HTTPS is the port. HTTPS uses TCP Port 443 by default, so HTTP and HTTPS are two separate communications. HTTPS works in conjunction with another protocol, SSL which stands for Secure Sockets Layer, to transport data safely.

Now, remember, HTTP and HTTPS don’t care how the data gets to its destination. In contrast, SSL doesn’t care what the data looks like, but it makes sure it gets to you safely. People often use the terms HTTPS and SSL interchangeably, but this isn’t accurate. HTTPS is secure because it uses SSL to move data. They are two separate things.

And there you have it! That is the overview of http and https. SO, why should you make sure that SSL/https is on your website? Well, in short, it makes your website much more secure, and Google has started punishing sites in search result that don't have SSL certificates setup. Thus, if you want to make sure your site is secure as possible and ranks as high as possible on Google, SSL is a must!

With that being said, I hope you enjoyed this video and you now know what the difference between http and https is. If it did, please give the video a thumbs up and be sure to subscribe to the channel if you haven't already. It really helps us out, and it means a lot to me. Thank you very much in advance!
