STORYLINE:
More than 300 local people celebrated the Jewish religious holiday of Hanukkah in central Moscow on Sunday night with music and dancing.
A ceremony took place in Manezhnaya square, close to the Kremlin, during which the traditional holiday menorah or Hanukkiya was lit.
"I'm very glad that every year we celebrate here in the centre of Moscow, it has become a tradition now," said Berel Lazar, Russia's Chief Rabbi.
"Indeed it is a miracle, because twenty-thirty years ago if one even thought that Jewish people could one day celebrate their holidays in this way nobody would have believed it," he added.
The eight-day Jewish celebration, which began at sunset on Friday, commemorates the re-dedication of the temple by Jewish rebels known as the Maccabees after their victory over the Syrians.
