The UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) updated its travel guidance, warning the tourists against the UAE’s strict laws. British tourists visiting the UAE were urged to familiarize themselves with the Emirati laws, as the country follows strict cultural practices and may not tolerate actions deemed acceptable in the UK

Behaviors like swearing, public displays of affection, and dressing inappropriately can lead to arrest or deportation in the UAE. The FCDO said swearing or making offensive gestures, including on social media, can result in jail time or deportation. Additionally, public displays of affection like kissing are illegal in the UAE and may lead to serious legal consequences

The guidelines also involved dress code restrictions, stating that tourists are expected to dress modestly in public. The UAE strictly prohibits cross-dressing and recommends that women cover their shoulders and knees. Besides, swimwear is permitted only in designated beach and pool areas

While alcohol consumption is permitted in licensed venues, being publicly intoxicated is a criminal offense. The emirate of Sharjah bans both alcohol consumption and possession entirely. The FCDO guidelines present a stark contrast to the Emirates' self-portrayal as a liberal and tolerant nation.

As part of its diversification strategy, the UAE invests heavily in promoting tourism and attracting millions of visitors. However, strict regulations and human rights issues obstruct the Emirati vision of making UAE a preferred tourist destination. UAE laws also deem online criticism of the government or its institutions online a serious violation.

The FCDO warned British tourists that sharing disrespectful content online that may offend the country’s culture is illegal. It said visitors should be aware of the legal consequences for any public conduct deemed inappropriate in the UAE

The FCDO encouraged tourists to thoroughly review the latest travel advisories before visiting Dubai or other parts of the UAE. While it warned that imprisonment and deportation could be a result of failure to adhere to local laws, human rights advocate and founder of Detained in Dubai, Radha Stirling said it’s not that “simple”

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Stirling highlighted the flaws of the FCDO guidelines. She wrote: “What the FCDO doesn't mention is the prevalence of false allegations against British citizens.” Over the years, several British tourists have been unjustly detained and tortured in the UAE.

While the FCDO’s travel guidelines emphasize the importance of following local laws, the actual experience for tourists in the UAE is often far from what is portrayed.
