So you’re trying to buy a piece of equipment, but all the lingo has got you confused? No matter if you’re looking for a little skid steer, or a big D8 dozer- watch this video to the end for what you need to know when looking at equipment online!
Talon Machinery is a full service heavy equipment company, we currently represent a portfolio of 50 machines and it’s growing every day- which makes us among the largest used heavy equipment dealers in North America. We want to help you find the right machine for your needs so you can get the maximum return on your investment- even if you don’t get your machine from us.
Lets start off with some general terms. These can apply to most any kind of machine.
1. ROPS- This stands for “roll over protection.” Most modern equipment has some sort of roll over protection, what you’re looking for here is if this says “EROPS” which means enclosed, or “OROPS” which means open. Long story short, this just lets you know if the machine has an enclosed cab. If you just see ROPS it typically means the machine has an open cab.
2. UC- This stands for Under Carriage, which is the industry term for the tracks and parts related to the tracks such as the sprockets, idlers, rollers, etc. You will often see a number represented as a percentage next to the letters UC. This usually is an estimate of how much life is left on the under carriage before it will need service. The higher the number, the better.
3. AUX/Auxiliaries/3rd valve- all of these are the same thing. Auxiliaries are the the hydraulic plumbing required to operate most powered attachments such as mulchers, thumbs, grapples, etc.
4. QC- Stands for Quick Coupler, sometimes just called a coupler, it’s the hardware that makes it so you can change attachments without any tools, and often without exiting the cab of the machine.
Now lets get into some machine specific terms-
Skid Steers-
· Hi-Flow- This is a high capacity auxiliary hydraulic pump which is required if you want to use some attachments such as sweepers and mulchers.
· 2-speed- Pretty straight forward, but basically means that you can drive in 2 speeds. Low speed for pushing power, high speed to get around the job site faster.
Loaders-
· Ride control and Boom suspension- These are similar features, they make the boom of the machine act as if it has shock absorbers. This makes it so operators can operate better without the load shifting around on bumps.
· Tool handler- These are special purpose loaders built to handle the demands of specialty attachments. They often have reinforced frames, different booms, higher capacity hydraulic pumps, and extra hydraulic cylinders.
· Scales- often seen on former quarry machines, scales let the operator know how much they are carrying in the bucket.
Excavators-
· Grouser- This describes how many paddles are on each track pad. In short, A single grouser is better for muddy conditions, triple grouser is better for rocky conditions.
· Mass Ex- Otherwise known as a mass excavator, these are machines with a shorter, thicker stick, higher capacity cylinders, and a heavier bucket.
Dozers-
· Ripper/MS ripper- A ripper is basically a large claw that goes on the back of the machine that can be used for a variety of purposes, often tilling the ground to loosen it up. MS Ripper just means a Multi Shank ripper.
· Root Rake- Just as the name suggests, this is a piece of hardware installed on the front of the machine to rip up roots and other debris when land clearing.
· LGP- This means Low Ground Pressure. That’s achieved by equipping the machine with wider tracks.
There are so many more things we could talk about here, but that’s going to be for another video. It’s great that you stayed until the end of the video, if there was something we missed in this one throw it down in the comments so we can get to it in the next video! Until next time, dig your claws in, like and subscribe!
