Politics is largely about deciding who gets the money: how much tax we
pay, and where that money is spent. Participatory Budgeting allows
citizens into the decision making process. Alan Budge’s talk explains
how this happens, and provides startling examples of the power of
Participatory Budgeting to expand the democratic potential of
communities in the UK and beyond.

Alan Budge worked in community development for several years before joining the Bradford Local Strategic Partnership (BLSP), where he played a central role in the development of the BLSP’s pioneering participatory grant-making programme. He is currently working as an Associate with Participatory Budgeting Partners, offering training and delivery support to its programmes across the UK.

Since 2014 Alan has been working with the Scottish Government on the national roll-out of Budgeting Partners in Scotland; offering direct support to 10 programmes, including groundbreaking work in the island communities of Orkney, Shetland and the Western Isles.

This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
