In March 2006, during the demolition of the old school building, construction workers discovered a sealed locker containing Maya's denim jacket with an embroidered sunflower and her purple diary. The diary revealed disturbing entries about Principal Thomas Watkins and a letter Maya had written to the school board asking for help. This is the story of institutional failure, a mother's unwavering determination, and the truth that was hidden behind a basement wall for over two decades. The case led to significant reforms in how missing children cases are handled and resulted in Maya's Law being passed in Ohio in 2009.
