Navigating New Challenges: A Roundtable on Canada’s Defence Policy Update

The Institute for Peace & Diplomacy is pleased to invite you to a panel webinar on Canada’s Defence Policy Update scheduled for Thursday, April 13, 2023 from 3PM-4PM Eastern Time. With the release of the 2023 federal budget and Minister Anand’s recent announcement for public consultations on Canada's military and defence strategy, the roundtable seeks a proactive discussion on addressing whether the existing defence policy—Strong, Secure, Engaged (SSE)—is sufficient to safeguard Canadian security and defence interests at home and abroad in a seemingly more hostile global order.

The topics of discussion will encompass the ability of the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) to advance Canada's distinct defence and security interests while managing extra-regional responsibilities and commitments. We will also examine Canada's domestic industrial infrastructure capabilities for developing, manufacturing, and equipping CAF and its allies in both continental and extra-regional conflicts. Additionally, the modernization or restoration of CAF's branch services will be evaluated, as well as the need for Canada to prioritize its geosecurity peripheries—namely the Arctic, Transatlantic, Indo-Pacific, or continental North America—for defence and security purposes.
