Indian Navy’s Procedure for Intercepting a Suspicious Vessel:

Intercepting a suspicious vessel is a critical naval operation to ensure maritime security, prevent smuggling, piracy, and infiltration. The Indian Navy follows a structured approach combining intelligence, surveillance, and swift action to neutralize threats.

Procedure for Interception:

Detection & Surveillance:

Suspicious vessels are detected through radar, maritime patrol aircraft (like P-8I), UAVs, and naval satellites.

The Information Management and Analysis Centre (IMAC) in Gurugram monitors ship movements.

Classification & Threat Assessment:

Vessel identity is verified using AIS (Automatic Identification System) and intelligence reports.

Factors like erratic movement, lack of identification, and deviation from the expected route raise red flags.

Warning & Hailing:

The vessel is contacted via radio communication (VHF Channel 16) for identification.
Signal flares, sirens, and light signals are used if radio contact fails.

Boarding & Inspection

Marine Commandos (MARCOS) or a naval boarding team approaches using Fast Interceptor Crafts (FICs) or helicopters.

Crew is interrogated, cargo is inspected, and documents are verified.
Use of Force (If Necessary)

If the vessel resists or poses a threat, warning shots may be fired.

Special Forces may storm the ship in case of armed resistance or illegal activity.

Detention or Release:

If found innocent, the vessel is allowed to proceed.

If involved in illegal activities, the vessel is detained, and the crew is handed over to coastal security agencies like the Indian Coast Guard or Marine Police.

Final Thoughts:

The Indian Navy’s rapid interception procedures ensure national security and maritime law enforcement. Advanced technology, intelligence coordination, and combat-ready forces keep India’s waters safe.
