This is not a lake. It is an abandoned oil and gas well. The well was drilled in the 1940’s. Since then, the well integrity has collapsed. Toxic water and chemicals have flooded to surface for over 20 years.

This is a common occurrence throughout the Permian Basin oilfields. Abandoned wells threaten the entire region’s water. Harmful chemicals often spill into aquifers and water tables. This “lake” heavily smells like hydrogen sulfide. The intense emissions cause headaches and stomachaches. The State government has failed to address this issue. The environmental disaster is a few miles from Imperial, Texas

The forces created by this practice are causing earthquakes. And now we are learning more about how this practice is also resulting in the contamination of ground water as the pressures being added to the reservoirs under the Permian are causing oil to leak from old wells as well as more events like the one that caused Lake Boehmer"

Lake Boehmer represents a crisis of the oil and gas industry. Corporations drill hundreds of thousands of wells but fail to clean up their mess. Oil companies fail to plug wells and threaten the safety of all West Texans.
