A general overview of the Book of Proverbs is that it is a collection of moral and religious teachings in the form of sayings known as proverbs. Many of these sayings involved basic practical advice regarding everyday concerns. The book starts out with one of its more famous and foundational proverbs as follows:

"The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, But fools despise wisdom and instruction." (Proverbs 1:7)

It then goes on to deal with numerous matters related to religious observance, morality, basic common sense, and respect towards others. The many short sayings within the book reveal the wealth of insights the ancient Israelite teachers possessed. A strong emphasis is placed on what a wise person will do verse what a fool will do in certain situations throughout the book as it relates to: relationships with others, work ethic, and general morality. Many of the proverbs also deal with marital relationships and the virtue of self-control. Much is said about such qualities as humility, patience, respect for the poor, loyalty to friends, and the value of having a virtuous wife.
