Are your bigleaf hydrangeas blooming? I’ve ripped out a few of mine due to unreliability and will be taking out at least one more this summer. They can be such a tease. And they’re SUCH DIVAS! Life is short so get something you can count on if yours are not delivering.😭 Yes, the climate is warming but if we continue to get very cold temperatures those buds can still freeze!

In addition to many of these not being able to tolerate the cold temperatures, they like a lot of moisture, acidic soil, 3-4 hours of light (but not too much!), and not in the afternoon. And whatever you do, don’t cut them down or you’ll be cutting off those buds. Some bred varieties are more tolerant of cold but even the Endless Summers are sometimes Endless “Bummers”.😭😂

Alternatives: oakleaf hydrangea, wild arborescens (both require no maintenance); arborescens, like Annabelle and Incrediball (usually cut down hard in spring); panicle hydrangeas, like limelights; serratas (mountain hydrangeas). Or something completely different!
