Long neglected, the comics medium has increasingly gained scholarly attention as a provider of highly textured and hybrid word-and-image texts. Through the presence of speech balloons, captions or onomatopoeiae, the multimodal interplay of words and pictures in comics has offered countless graphic experiments over the past centuries.

In the 1830s and benefitting from the development of the lithographic printmaking process, Swiss artist Rodolphe Töpffer explored the “autographic” technique which allowed him to transfer directly and accurately his drawings and handwriting from paper to the lithographic stone. It allowed to retain the spontaneity of both his line art and lettering while ensuring some level of homogeneity between the two modalities. Along with production imperatives, the harmonization of handwritten or typeset text with the cartoonists’ distinctive art styles has played an essential part in the art of comics lettering. A prime example is Art Spiegelman’s prestigious graphic novel “MAUS” in which the text styling was organically conceived with the drawn art. As a prerequisite to any translation of the graphic novel, the potential foreign editors must first provide lettering samples convincingly matching Art Spiegelman’s. This condition has slowed down the publication of “MAUS” in Thai language as a series of lettering proposals have been rejected up until recently. Despite certain limitations, Comics Art has been and remains a vast playground of exploration for craftsmen such as revered comic book letterer and logo designer Todd Klein.

This presentation will shed light on some of the most outstanding examples of text-image interplays in comics art, from Will Eisner’s imaginative integration of textual elements in his “splash pages” to Cuban artist Roberto Altmann's lettrist experiments. Special attention will also be paid to the Thai production with the showcase of remarkable title banners by Siamese cartoonists in the 1930s, from 1960s comics by Payut Ngaokrachang and Tawee Witsanukorn, and from the rich yet neglected one-baht comics production.
