What is an Auxiliary Verb?
An auxiliary verb (or a helping verb) is a verb that adds functional or grammatical meaning to the clause in which it appears, such as to express tense, aspect, modality, voice, emphasis, etc. An auxiliary verb is most generally understood as a verb that “helps” another verb by adding grammatical information to it.
🔶Auxiliaries are of three types.
1️⃣Primary Auxiliary
2️⃣Modal Auxiliaries
3️⃣Semi Modals
Some of the examples for Primary auxiliaries are am, is, are, was, were, have, has...etc
🔶Modal Auxiliary Verbs
What is a modal auxiliary verb?
A modal auxiliary verb, often simply called a modal verb or even just a modal, is used to change the meaning of other verbs (commonly known as main verbs) by expressing modality—that is, asserting (or denying) possibility, likelihood, ability, permission, obligation, or future intention.
Modal auxiliaries consist of verbs such as can, could, would, should, must. Semi models are the verbs such as need, dare used to.
