The jian is a traditional Chinese double-edged straight sword with a history spanning over 2,500 years, dating back to the Zhou Dynasty (1046-256 BCE). Known as the "Gentleman of Weapons" in Chinese culture, it was favored by nobility and scholars as a symbol of refinement and social status. Historical jians were masterfully forged using traditional techniques involving seven or more layers of steel folded repeatedly to create blades with exceptional flexibility and strength. The blade typically measures 28-30 inches in length and only 2-3 millimeters in thickness, making it one of the thinnest sword designs in history. Both edges are sharpened along the entire length, and the blade tapers to an extremely fine point optimized for precise thrusting attacks, particularly effective at finding gaps in armor. During China's imperial period, military officers and nobles wore the jian at court because its elegant design was considered more civilized than heavier military swords like the dao. The sword's lightweight construction (typically 1.5-2 pounds) allowed for incredible speed and precision in combat. Modern tai chi jians maintain this traditional design but are often made even thinner using high-carbon steel that can flex up to 30 degrees without permanent deformation.
