One of my favourite airlines of yesteryear, and perhaps a rival to Pan Am for exemplifying the golden era of American air travel, Trans World Airlines or TWA had roots dating back to the foundling days of commercial aviation, and by the 1950s had become the face of airborne glamour, sporting a style, sophistication and technological prowess that set the standard for its rivals both domestic and international, while supported by the limitless fortune of the enigmatic Howard Hughes.

Sadly, TWA, from its zenith in the 1950s, would begin a slow, long slide towards its ultimate demise in 2001, with each successive decade bringing new challenges for which the carrier proved unable to suitably adapt like its more flexible and strategically superior competitors, and with the aviation industry evolving faster than TWA could, it was only a matter of time before this grand old lady of the American commercial aviation scene would meet its end.
