Epithalame was written in 1953 and commissioned by Marcel Couraud, the conductor of the Chorale Nationale de Radio France and head of the Ensemble Vocal Marcel Couraud. The Epithalame was composed for this latter group. Jolivet composed Epithalame (Epithalamium or bridal room) as a gift for his wife on the occasion of their twentieth wedding anniversary. The text is compiled from various sacred Egyptian, Indian, Chinese, Hebrew and Greek texts. The poem that thus originated is an ode to the union of man and woman.
