The Joyless Street (1925, clip from restored version)

This clip is captured from the 2009 DVD edition of the 1925 German silent classic "The Joyless Street" (Die freudlose Gasse). The all-region PAL DVD is made by the German company "Edition Filmmuseum" and can be ordered from its website here: https://www.edition-filmmuseum.com/pr... . The 2-disc DVD set costs 30 euros plus shipping, which comes to about 50 US dollar. The DVD uses the 1997 restoration of the film by Jan-Christopher Horak. The picture quality is not the best, but this is still, to date, the best-looking and most complete version of the film, running at 151 minutes. This restored version is currently available nowhere else on home video except this DVD. This video clip shows a scene that was censored and cut in the past due to its subject matter: an evil butcher who trades meat for sex. Asta Nielsen and Hertha von Walther play the two women, and Werner Krauss plays the butcher. Greta Garbo also stars in this film as one of the fallen women.
