🛢️ Oil Mist Collectors
For Oil Mist, Oil Fog, Smoke, and Fine Particulate Collection

Oil mist collectors are specialized air-filtration systems designed to remove oil mist, coolant fog, oil smoke, and fine airborne particles generated during machining and metalworking processes.
They protect worker health, equipment, and facility cleanliness, while allowing clean air to be safely exhausted or recirculated.

These systems are very different from baghouses or standard dust collectors — they are engineered specifically for liquid aerosols.

🔍 What Is Oil Mist?

Oil mist is created when lubricants or coolants are:

sprayed onto cutting tools

atomized by high-speed spindles

heated and partially vaporized

mechanically sheared during machining

Common sources include:

CNC machining centers

lathes and mills

grinding machines

honing operations

EDM machines

broaching and drilling

metal cutting with MQL systems

Typical contaminants:

oil mist (liquid droplets)

oil fog (ultra-fine aerosol)

coolant mist (water-oil emulsions)

oil smoke (thermal breakdown products)

fine metal dust mixed with oil

Particle sizes range from sub-micron to ~20 microns.

⚠️ Hazards of Oil Mist & Fog
1️⃣ Respiratory Exposure

Fine oil aerosols penetrate deep into the lungs and may cause:

irritation

headaches

nausea

long-term respiratory issues

2️⃣ Slippery Surfaces & Safety Risks

Oil mist settles on:

floors

machines

handrails

Increasing slip-and-fall hazards.

3️⃣ Equipment Damage

Oil buildup affects:

electronics

sensors

optics

motors

4️⃣ Fire Risk

Oil mist and smoke are flammable, especially near hot surfaces.

5️⃣ Regulatory Compliance

OSHA exposure limits apply to oil mist in the workplace.

🏭 How Oil Mist Collectors Work

Oil mist collectors use multi-stage separation, not fabric filtration like baghouses.

⭐ Stage 1 — Mechanical Pre-Separation

Incoming air passes through baffles or inertial separators:

large oil droplets impact surfaces

droplets coalesce

liquid drains into a sump

This removes the heaviest fraction first.

⭐ Stage 2 — Coalescing Filtration

Fine droplets pass through coalescing media:

tiny droplets collide

merge into larger droplets

gravity pulls them downward

oil drains continuously

This is the core of oil mist removal.

⭐ Stage 3 — Fine Filtration / Polishing

For very fine fog or smoke:

high-efficiency fiber filters

optional HEPA stage

removes sub-micron aerosols

Ensures clean exhaust air.

⭐ Stage 4 — Clean Air Discharge

Cleaned air is:

exhausted outdoors

or safely returned to the workspace

Recovered oil can often be reused or disposed of properly.

🏗️ Types of Oil Mist Collectors
🔹 1. Mechanical / Coalescing Oil Mist Collectors (MOST COMMON)

Best for:

oil mist

coolant fog

MQL systems

Features:

high efficiency

low pressure drop

continuous drainage

low maintenance

🔹 2. Cartridge-Based Oil Mist Collectors

Used when:

mist + fine dust are present

higher filtration efficiency is needed

Cartridges are oil-resistant and designed for aerosol capture.

🔹 3. Electrostatic Oil Mist Collectors

Effective for:

oil smoke

very fine fog

Require:

clean oil

consistent maintenance

careful electrical safety

🔹 4. Hybrid Systems

Combine:

mechanical separation

coalescing media

fine filtration

Best for mixed oil mist + dust environments.

🛠️ Engineering Notes for Oil Mist Systems

✔ Oil mist collectors are not dust collectors — do not use baghouses
✔ Use drainable, oil-resistant media
✔ Ensure proper duct velocity (usually lower than dust systems)
✔ Provide continuous oil drainage
✔ Maintain negative pressure at machines
✔ Consider HEPA filtration if air is recirculated
✔ Explosion protection may be required for oil smoke
✔ Regular maintenance is critical for efficiency

🏭 Typical Applications

CNC machining centers

Grinding and polishing lines

Metal fabrication shops

Automotive manufacturing

Aerospace machining

Tool & die shops

Medical device machining

High-speed spindles

MQL lubrication systems
