PRAINBORK, a spoof project based in Los Angeles, CA, is the brainchild of Art Bertik-Marquez (Despite Loyalty, Strangled by Strangulation) and Manic Merganser (LA based cartoon, digital, and graphic artist). Darbie Thundercleese (LA based poet, crochet maker, and painter) joined in on the fun later. All three main members contribute to the lyrics, album art, and producing the music. Most tracks also borrow the talents of guest musicians from Entelodon’s own arsenal. Among the featured artists are Darkovika, Eric “Deadboy” Smolinski (Despite Loyalty, DigitalSexSlave), Nate Filichia (Lock/Jaw, Bate), and Memo (Lock/Jaw, Cremated). Other notable star appearances include Danny Walker (Intronaut, Exhumed, Phobia), and Kevin Talley (Dying Fetus, Six Feet Under, Suffocation). Each collaborator brings something unique to the table, and the result is a cornucopia of musical variety.
Similar to bizarre bands like Primus and Gwar, Prainbork takes an absurd premise, and makes something awesome behind the guise of a parody. The album art is cartoony and grotesque, mirroring the quirky lyrics. Behind the satirical hysteria, there are advanced musical techniques like tremolo picking, sweep picking, and pick scrapes. The guitar work is ornate enough to rival extreme metal, while many of the choruses nod toward pop punk. The combination of these two genres results in a fast paced, thrashy sound. Art once joked about music genres containing the suffix ‘core’ (e.g. hardcore, happy core, deathcore, grindcore, etc.) and said that Prainbork is the birth of a new one, Apple Core.
Prainbork is mainly a studio project, with the album “A Wrench Short of a Baker’s Dozen” and the singles “Babyfood Head” and "Prosthetic Burritos" in their repertoire of releases. A strong visual element is key to their music, and several Easter eggs and inside jokes are concealed throughout their work. While it may seem crazy on the surface, this project is secretly badass. Intricate speed metal riffage and insanely catchy beats hide behind the humorous exterior. Surprisingly complex, this facetious band is a far cry from the normal slop that the corporate music industry feeds to itself.
