DIY: Hydroponic Lettuce -From Germination To Seedlings Using Net Basket, Clay Pellets, Sponge & Cups

Starting a new batch of lettuce for personal consumption. Growing indoor plants using Kratky hydroponics method.

Goal is to limit supplies to nutrients and pH adjuster, and to use recycled, repurposed materials, and to minimize waste (on seeds and materials).

Each batch consist of 10 seeds. Success rate is over 80%. Harvest is four weeks after seedlings, producing 80 to 100g at least twice per week as a side salad. Lettuce are gradually harvested from the outer leaf, not one-time. Lettuce are kept up to 75days from germination before discarding.

In this clip, lettuce seeds are emersed in tap water and stored in the fridge to accelerate germination. Fastest was three days. Seeds that doesn't germinate within two weeks are discarded, some are "late bloomers." Give them a chance!

Seeds that germinated are moved under an LED light full spectrum, four inches below it.

Sprouts are moved to a growing material - a cut up dish sponge - where they're allowed to sprout under LED light.

Sprouts are moved to starters, with 50% nutrient solution and 50% plain tap water, adjusted to 5.5pH. And placed under LED light again between 4-6 inches distance from the canopy. Sprouts will remain here until they're four inches tall.
