Raja Parikshit, the grandson of Arjuna and son of Abhimanyu, was a revered king from the Kuru dynasty. His death is a pivotal event in Hindu mythology, particularly in the context of the Śrīmad Bhāgavatam. The story begins when Parikshit, after a long day of hunting, entered the hermitage of Sage Samika, seeking water. The sage was deep in meditation and did not respond to the king’s request, which enraged Parikshit. In a moment of anger, he placed a dead snake around the sage’s neck as an insult and left. When the sage’s son, Shringi, saw this, he was furious and cursed Parikshit, predicting that he would die in seven days from a snake bite by the serpent king Takshaka. Upon learning of the curse, Parikshit accepted his fate and chose to spend his remaining days listening to the Śrīmad Bhāgavatam, narrated by Sage Shukadeva. On the seventh day, Takshaka, disguised as a Brahmin, managed to enter the king’s fortified palace and bit him, leading to Parikshit’s instant death. This event eventually prompted Parikshit’s son, Janamejaya, to perform a massive snake sacrifice to avenge his father’s death, though it was ultimately halted to preserve the balance of nature. The story of Raja Parikshit’s death is a reflection on the themes of karma, destiny, and the inevitability of death, which are central to Hindu philosophy.
